Ellis May

"An enthralling new talent” - Clash magazine

“This feels like an artist with an old soul, reframing the ancient and sepia-toned via an expansive digital world” - The Line of Best Fit

"There's an astonishing exactness to her work, the ripples of noise conjuring beatific visions” - Clash Magazine

"Old Love’, although a debut effort, displays deep rooted wisdom and majestic musicality, as Ellis May’s voice hovers above the off-kilter melody, as rich as it is deep, and as delicate as a plume of smoke" – JaJaJa Music

Ellis May’s debutalbum er klar til efteråret.

ENGLISH VERSION

"An enthralling new talent” - Clash magazine

Ellis May, a rising solo artist hailing from Copenhagen, is the alter ego of singer, composer, producer and sound designer Sophia Maj.

Her songs are hyper-realism written in melodic basslines, somehow out of genres and woven together with layers of sampled piano, drum machines, dreamy choir-scapes, gloomy synthesizers and immense vocal depth.

Uncovering her own sound meant that May had to educate herself as a songwriter, performer and a producer, as well as unlearn techniques she had previously relied on. She decided to study Sound Design at the National Film School of Denmark - and that way liberating her expression, while keeping the process pure and very personal. In her own words: "To actualize the songs authenticity, I didn't want to be a singer singing, I wanted to be a woman singing”.

“This feels like an artist with an old soul, reframing the ancient and sepia-toned via an expansive digital world”.

Clash Magazine followed up and said: "there's an astonishing exactness to her work, the ripples of noise conjuring beatific visions”

- while JaJaJa was equally excited: "Old Love’, although a debut effort, displays deep rooted wisdom and majestic musicality, as Ellis May’s voice hovers above the off-kilter melody, as rich as it is deep, and as delicate as a plume of smoke"

Fall 2020 will see the release of Ellis May's debut album.
